Aaron Watson’s Texas Favorites

Written by: Samantha Latta

January 5, 2018 by mikepadgett

In an exclusive sit-down interview with Aaron Watson himself, a member of Texasliving’s editorial team gathered a list of his favorite spots in the Lone Star State. From his favorite Texas sports teams to his personal favorite barbeque joint, find out the facts you may not have known about Texas country music’s Honky Tonk Kid!

FAVORITE TEXAS TOWN/CITY:

“Buffalo Gap, TX. The mom and pop restaurants, the big Oak trees, the deer… mmm.”

FAVORITE PLACE TO EAT IN TEXAS:

“My favorite place to eat would be Doug’s BBQ in Amarillo. I have been eating at Doug’s BBQ since I was like two. I can actually remember mom taking me there on walks in a stroller. And then in 5th grade, if you brought a note from your parents on Fridays, you could walk outside the playground fence across the alley to Doug’s and eat lunch. In high school for lunch days we’d go to Doug’s, every time I go back to Amarillo we go to Doug’s. The same booth, same menu, same food, still get the bottled cokes. I always get two sausage sandwiches and a bowl of beans. 34th and Georgia.”

FAVORITE MUSIC VENUE IN TEXAS:

“That’s tough. I always say music venues are kind of like churches, it’s not the church, it’s the people. So anywhere in Texas is my favorite. I have fun every night, whether there’s 50 people or 50,000 people.”

FAVORITE VACATION SPOT IN TEXAS:

“Lake LBJ, Possum Kingdom, Palo Duro Canyon, going down to South Padre off the coast and fishing for red fish, going down to HEB Camp off the Frio.”

FAVORITE TEXAS SPORTS TEAM:

“That’s tough, it’s so tough because the wonderful thing is that because of what I do for a living, I’ve had the opportunity to get to know players and coaches. I grew up a die-hard Dallas Cowboys, Houston Astros fan. I saw Nolan’s 5th no-hitter in 1981, I was there. But my dad also liked the Houston Oilers, but then the Oilers left, then Nolan got traded to the Rangers, so I started loving the Rangers. Then the Texans came along and I had a buddy from Abilene play for the Texans Case Keenum. It’s hard because I root for all things Texas. Especially if they’re playing a team like the Yankees! My boys are pretty infatuated with the Spurs too.”

FAVORITE TEXAS RODEO:

“Houston, San Antonio, Corpus, there’s so many. Any rodeo in Texas is amazing.”

FAVORITE TEXAS FESTIVAL:

“It’s hard to pick one out because they all take care of me and my family. It’s important to know that all the proceeds from our ticket sales, merchandise, and album sales go directly into my wife’s purse. The end.”

Pierce Ranch

In the summer of 1854, a destitute stowaway on a Texas-bound schooner was discovered and forced to work for his passage. After handling freight to pay for his travel, nineteen-year-old Abel Head Pierce, a native of Little Compton, Rhode Island, landed at the Texas port of Indianola five months after leaving home. The meeting between Pierce and the rich soil of the coastal plains of Texas might have been destiny. The young man would go on to amass a fortune in land and cattle, not far from where he first disembarked.
