Five Margaritas to Celebrate National Margarita Day

Already longing for the long sunny days of summer? Missing the delicious, refreshing drinks to enjoy poolside? Look no further. These five margaritas will have you floating on a warm summer breeze in no time, and just in time for National Margarita Day! Celebrate Texas’s favorite drink with any of these tried and true margarita recipes.

Each of the following recipes serves one person and was developed with Texas summers in mind. Just remember to drink responsibly; if the weather is nice, enjoy these drinks in a porch swing or hanging out by the pool.

Prickly Pear Margarita

A Prickly Pear is the fruit of a cactus that grows throughout the state. The juice has a bit of a melon flavor that lends a bright, pink color to this drink. You can find prickly pear syrup at many local grocery stores or online.

Ingredients
  • 3 ounces silver tequila
  • ½ ounce Triple Sec
  • 1½ ounces lime juice
  • 2 ounces prickly pear syrup
  • ½ cup ice
  • Lime slices for garnish
  • 1 teaspoon salt crystals
Instructions
  1. Rub the rim of a margarita glass with lime juice.
  2. Combine the salt and sugar crystals and roll the rim of the glass in the mixture until it is coated.
  3. Set aside.
  4. Combine the tequila, Triple Sec, lime juice, and syrup in a cocktail shaker with the ice.
  5. Shake until blended and cold.
  6. Strain into the glass.
  7. Garnish with a slice of lime.

Blueberry and Basil Margarita

Basil has a minty taste that is very refreshing. Here it is paired with frozen blueberries to create a sweet, slushy drink that packs a punch.

Ingredients
  • ¾ cup blueberries, frozen overnight if fresh
  • 3 ounces tequila
  • 1 ounce blueberry moonshine
  • 1 ounce lime juice
  • 1 ounce sugar syrup, or to taste
  • 1 tablespoon chopped basil leaves
  • Whole basil leaves for garnish
  • 1 tablespoon pink Himalayan salt crystals
  • 1 tablespoon sugar crystals
Instructions
  1. Mix the salt and the sugar.
  2. Dampen the rim of a margarita glass with lime juice.
  3. Roll the rim of the glass in the salt and sugar mixture.
  4. Set aside.
  5. Mix the blueberries, tequila, blueberry moonshine, lime juice, sugar syrup, and chopped basil in a blender.
  6. Blend until smooth and slushy.
  7. Pour into the prepared glass and garnish with basil.

Peach Margarita

If you happen to have plenty of those sweet Parker County peaches on hand, then give this margarita a try. Sweet peaches plus peach schnapps make it taste just like a bite of fresh fruit.

Ingredients
  • 3 ounces of tequila
  • 1 ½ ounces of lime juice
  • 1 ounce peach schnapps
  • 1 cup peach slices
  • ½ tablespoon brown sugar
  • ½ cup crushed ice
  • 1 teaspoon each salt crystals and brown sugar mixed with 1 pinch cinnamon for rim
  • Peach slice for garnish
Instructions
  1. Dampen the rim of a margarita glass with lime juice.
  2. Roll the rim in the salt and brown sugar mixture.
  3. Set aside.
  4. Add the tequila, lime juice, schnapps, peach slices, 1/2 tablespoon brown sugar, and crushed ice to a blender.
  5. Blend until smooth and slushy.
  6. Pour into the margarita glass.
  7. Garnish with a peach slice.

Frozen Banana Margarita with Sweet Chile Rim

This unique margarita is as unpredictable as Texas weather. When you take a sip, your mouth will tingle from the chipotle and then will be chilled by the frozen banana slush.

Ingredients
  • 1 ½ ounces tequila
  • ½ ounce Triple Sec
  • ½ ounce Banana liqueur
  • ½ ounce lime juice
  • ½ cup frozen banana slices
  • Chipotle powder
  • Sugar crystals
  • ½ cup crushed ice
Instructions
  1. Mix the chipotle powder and sugar crystals.
  2. Rub the rim of a margarita glass and roll in the chipotle mixture to coat.
  3. Set aside.
  4. Add the tequila, Triple Sec, banana liqueur, lime juice, and banana slices to the blender.
  5. Blend until smooth and slushy and pour over the crushed ice in the prepared glass.
  6. Garnish with banana and lime or as desired.

Skinny Cherry Limeade Margarita

Everyone needs a good low-calorie, low-carb margarita recipe in their collection, and this one is definitely it. If you are a fan of Sonic cherry limeades, then think of this as the adult version of a childhood favorite. Plus, it only has 215 calories and 0.5 carbs per serving. Now that is a happy hour!

Ingredients
  • 3 ounces tequila
  • ½ ounce lime juice
  • 1 squirt of sugar-free cherry limeade water enhancer
  • 1 cup of ice
  • 2 ounces diet 7-Up
  • 1 tablespoon erythritol sweetener
  • 1 fresh cherry
  • 1 slice lime
Instructions
  1. Rub rim of margarita glass with lime juice.
  2. Carefully roll it in erythritol or other non-sugar sweetener.
  3. Set aside.
  4. Blend everything but the 7-Up in the blender.
  5. Stir in the 7-Up.
  6. Pour into the margarita glass.
  7. Garnish as desired with the cherry and/or the lime.
