Making Margaritas: Advice from the experts at Dulce Vida

While there are many versions to the story behind the original margarita, America’s Number 1 cocktail still reigns supreme in the Lone Star State, no matter which tale proves to be true. In celebration of National Margarita Day, a local tequila company shared their insight and expertise behind the secrets of what makes the greatest mixture of tequila, salt, and lime.

To get the best tips and tricks for the perfect margarita, advice was gathered from the experts at Dulce Vida Spirits, an Austin-based, USDA organic tequila brand that “makes tequila the way it has always tasted best: pure and authentic.” Since 2009, Dulce Vida Spirits has become the largest independent tequila company in the U.S., and prides itself on their innovative line that blends 100 percent real fruit juices such as lime, grapefruit, and spicy jalapeno. When it comes to stirring up the best homemade margarita, Vice President of Marketing Adam Kost says that the taste all comes down to the quality of your ingredients.

First off, it is important to ensure that your selected tequila is made with 100 percent pure agave. According to Kost, “if the label isn’t stating [100 percent pure agave], it is probably mixed with a variety of different adjuncts during the distilling process,” which can really have an effect on your handcrafted cocktail. To truly perfect the refreshing taste, Kost also recommends using fresh squeezed fruit juices, despite the hard work it might endure!

When determining a tequila’s quality, keep in mind that they are subject to having different flavor profiles. Dulce Vida Spirit’s tequila is handcrafted in the Highlands, made right in the Altos region of Mexico. Due to this, their tequila “tends to have a floral and citrusy flavor,” Kost explained, “making it much more favorable for mixing.”

Once you have meticulously selected your ingredients and concocted the perfect margarita, Kost advises to “shake it, and strain it over ice – it adds the perfect amount of water to balance the cocktail.” After all that work, your margaritas are sure to have the magic touch!
